DAYTON - Girl Scouts of Buckeye Trails Council is proud to announce that six area girls will be presented with their Girl Scout Gold Awards at a 3 p.m. ceremony Sunday at the Girl Scout Program Center, 450 Shoup Mill Road, Dayton. They are six of 29 girls in a 7 1/3-county area to have achieved this honor. Mary Koogler, a resident of Cedarville, is is a senior at Greeneview High School, where she is active in volleyball, softball, student council, Girls Varsity G and National Honor Society. Her college plans include a major in family and consumer science at Ohio University.

Large crowd? Please. On Molokai, a half-dozen isn't a crowd. It's a mob scene. My wife and I had been traversing the Hawaiian island, plunked between Maui and Oahu and within view of both, for four days. Now, just moments before our return to Maui, we were in the company of more camera-toters than just about anywhere else we'd stopped on the "Friendly Isle." After a primer on how to liberate a macadamia with a mallet ("Whatever you do, watch your fingers"), Purdy made a few sales and the horde dispersed. Rush hour was over. At 38 miles long and 10 miles wide, Molokai is compact but dizzyingly diverse.

If you've heard of Gary Sredzienski, it's because of his accordion playing - unless, of course, you happen to have seen him as "Creek Man." Every week - and most days - for the past three years, Sredzienski, the host of WUNH 91.3 FM's Polka Party show and leading local man of the "squeezebox," has donned a hybrid wet suit and walked down the short hill from his Kittery Point, Maine, home, hopped in Chauncey Creek, and swam. "It's just a riot, man; it's just fun," says Sredzienski, who will turn 42 in April, most likely a day to also be celebrated in frigid Maine waters. It all started with news from his surfer friend, Joe Blajda.
