Divers fume at proposals for reserve permits
March 9, 2004 By Melanie Gosling Scuba divers are angry at government proposals to make them pay for permits to dive in marine reserves which they say will seriously damage the industry and do nothing to protect the underwater environment. They have also questioned why only scuba divers have been targeted while there are no proposals to permit other recreational users of marine protected areas like snorkellers, surfers, bathers, windsurfers, boaters or yachtsman. They believe if the motive is to try to stamp out rock lobster and perlemoen poaching, only stepped-up law enforcement will stop it.

A decade ago, Cozumel was home to a tiny fishing village. It was best known by divers and vacationers looking for an alternative to Cancun booming nearby. That sleepy village is long gone. Piers have been added, and cruise ships make more than 1,000 visits every year. Hotels have sprouted, and air service to the island is increasing. Day visitors now are drawn to shopping, beaches and an enthusiastic night life. Bars are often in full swing by early afternoon. But there still are quiet corners of Cozumel -- places to dive, swim and enjoy an island in the sun.

The Courier-Mail: Aussies tripping up on health [06mar04]
06mar04 Australian travellers might be adventurous, but they're also among the world's worst when it comes to taking health precautions on trips into developing countries. A global airport study co-authored by the Royal Melbourne Hospital's Infectious Diseases Service shows Australians are less likely than any other Western travellers to seek health advice before travelling to high-risk countries. Only 29 per cent of Australians surveyed at 16 major airports worldwide sought advice about infectious diseases before travelling, only 62 per cent were protected against hepatitis A and only 57 per cent against hepatitis B.

Spring Break Destinations
Spring Break Destinations Tired of Cancun? Daytona passe? Completely broke? Huge nerd? There's plenty of places to spend your Spring Break if you're willing to get creative. But remember, tattoos may be temporary, but Girls Gone Wild! Is permanent and you may want to run for office one day. Ginnie Springs, FL For those of us who have to work during Spring Break, finding a cool place for a day trip close to home can be a challenge. One of North Central Florida's (that's the stuff past Gainesville) hidden gems is Ginnie Springs on the Santa Fe River. The springs are open every day of the year for camping, scuba diving or tubing.
